Have you no shame, Velma Hylton?
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Gone are the days when our people in leadership had a sense of self-worth. The controversy swirling around proposed West Kingston commissioner Velma Hylton is more than enough to cause any self-respecting person to decline the position, saving her appointer's face, as well as enabling the 'other farce' of a commission to get under way. But, unfortunately, that is evidently too much to ask.
When Ms Hylton made her unfortunate comments at the last commission, she apparently forgot 'is not one time monkey a go waan wife', to use a common colloquial term, or perhaps she knew that her friends in high places would not give a rat's ass about whether her comments would have been too inflammatory for another appointment to be effected without this kind of hue and cry. After all, the stupid masses really don't count for much in the grand scheme of things.
develop pride
While it is disgusting that Attorney General Patrick Atkinson doesn't care enough about the people's views to press the Cabinet to withdraw the appointment, I think it is even worse how shamelessly our public figures behave.
In order for Jamaica to move forward, we really need to develop some sense of pride as individuals and as a nation. The Velma Hyltons and Patrick Atkinsons cannot be allowed to have the last say. Is it that we lack qualified people to serve as commissioners? The people who are to be served must have a say.
Have some shame, Velma! Do the right thing and let the nation's business go on.
