Lyn makes first final of Commonwealth Games

Jamaica’s campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games gathered momentum over the past two days as athletes competed across multiple disciplines in Glasgow, Scotland, ahead of another packed day of competition today.

It was a mixed bag of results for Jamaica on Friday as the island saw its fair share of wins and losses.

In the women’s 3x3 basketball competition, Jamaica recovered from a slow start to pick up their first win in their third game after two opening defeats.

The team opened their campaign with a nail-biting 17-18 loss to Uganda before falling 13-21 to FIBA World 3x3 silver medallists Australia.

They recovered in time for their third outing, thrashing the Cayman Islands 21-5 to close out day one action.

In women’s swimming, Jamaica’s Jessica Calderbank advanced from heat five in the 50m butterfly when she finished fourth in 27.17 seconds.

She was the only Jamaican to advance from the event, as despite winning heat four, Sabrina Lyn’s time of 27.72 was not quick enough to advance.

Calderbank’s campaign ended at the semi-final, however, as her 26.88 was not enough to book a spot in the final eight.

Jamaica was also represented in the men’s 100m breaststroke as Kito Campbell advanced from heat five after finishing fifth in one minute, 02.31 (1:02.31).

In the semi-final, Campbell finished behind the pack as he placed eighth in semi-final two with a time of 1:02.02 and far adrift of the qualifying spots.

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS

Jamaica saw massive improvements yesterday, with the Sunshine Girls stealing the spotlight.

They declared their medal intentions in a dominant performance to trounce Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago 81-22 in Pool B action.

Azara Wilmot, in her national debut, led the scoring with 29 points from 30 attempts, while Romelda Aiken-George, 25, and Shanice Beckford, 16, contributed to the team’s win.

The win puts Jamaica atop the group on goal difference, ahead of New Zealand who picked up a 74-44 win over Scotland.

The Girls will return to action today against New Zealand.

In the men’s 3x3 basketball, the JamRockerz began their Commonwealth Games campaign in defeat as they fell 16-22 to England.

However, they bounced back in their second game to see off Singapore 22-20 in a hotly contested affair.

Nicholai Brown was the team’s standout performer as he snagged eight points and three rebounds to lift the team to victory.

In the pool, Lyn recovered from Friday’s disappointment to advance from the heats of the women’s 100m breaststroke as her time of one minute, 09.11 seconds placed her fourth in heat three, and among the qualifiers for the semi-finals.

She continued her impressive performances in the semi-finals where she placed fifth in heat two in a time of 1:08.47, which was enough to advance to the final.

She will compete for a spot on the podium today with the final set for the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
