In a final that brought goals, drama and red cards, Frazsiers Whip secured an unprecedented fourth-straight hold on the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) title after getting the better of Arnett Gardens 2-0 yesterday at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
Jennifer Williams (12th minute, 66th) bagged a brace for the reigning champions on their way to the title.
The final promised to be an exciting affair as the two teams came into the fixture with unbeaten records and it delivered on its expectations.
Williams fired Frazsiers Whip into the lead in the opening exchanges following a period of pressure.
A lofted cross into the box was cleared by Arnett’s backline but only as far as Williams, who ran on to the ball and let loose a volley through a crowd of bodies and into the back of the net.
Spence believed she had doubled the lead just 10 minutes into the second half when she bundled the ball over the line, but the play was called back and the goal disallowed.
Frazsiers Whip had another brilliant chance at goal when Shennel Walters burst through, but Arnett’s defenders were able to recover in time to pull off a desperate goal-line clearance.
Frazsiers Whip’s persistence paid off when Williams completed her brace in the 66th minute with another first-time volley from the edge of the box.
The two teams were reduced to 10 players three minutes later when Frazsiers Whip’s Christina Salmon and Arnett’s Anna-Kay Richards were both shown red cards for an altercation off the ball.
Arnett had their chances as well and should have pulled one back through Shikira Douglas, who ran through on goal but her shot was met by an equally brilliant save from Italya Robinson.
Frazsiers Whip were millimetres away from a third goal in time added as Cassandra Smith lashed a shot at goal that struck the far post, but narrowly missed ricocheting into the back of the net.
The win extended Frazsiers Whip dominance in the local league as they pick up their fourth hold on the title.
It was an improvement for Arnett, who finished third last year.
