Shot putter secures first track and field medal for Jamaica at CAC Games

Shot putter Raymond Brown won Jamaica’s first medal in track and field at the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz, Mexico today.

The 26-year-old Brown finished third in the men’s shot put final to win the bronze and Jamaica’s third medal in Veracruz.

Brown recorded 18 point 3-0 metres, well short of his season’s best 20 point 3-5 metres.

The president of the Nurses Association of Jamaica, Janet Farr, says measures will be put in place to ensure the safety of workers dealing with mentally ill patients at the Kingston Public Hospital.

Utech re-admits law student following lawsuit

Fourth-year University of the Technology (UTech) student, Duke St John-Paul Foote, is discontinuing his court action against the institution.

A notice to discontinue was filed yesterday when the parties appeared before Justice Andrew Rattary in the Supreme Court.

The court was informed that UTech has complied with an injunction which ordered the institution to re-admit Foote.

The law student had filed an application challenging the university’s decision to deregister him.

This afternoon, Finance Minister, Dr Peter Phillips, tabled the first supplementary Budget for the 2014/2015 fiscal year in Parliament.

Budget slightly reduced

The Government will be spending 739.6 million dollars less than it had initially budgeted for this year.

This afternoon, Finance Minister, Dr Peter Phillips, tabled the first supplementary budget for the 2014/2015 fiscal year in Parliament.

The supplementary estimates propose a budget cut which will see projected spending moving from the approximately 540 billion dollars approved in April to about 539.3 billion dollars.

Phil Simmons hopes Australian recovers as he did

Meanwhile, former West Indies batsman Phil Simmons says he hopes Australia's Phil Hughes is as lucky as he was with his recovery from a serious head injury.

Hughes is in a critical condition after being struck on the head by a bouncer in a state match in Sydney today.

Simmons was hit by a David Lawrence ball in 1988 but made a full recovery following life-saving brain surgery.

Simmons was the same age as Hughes - 25 - when he took a blow on the head from a Lawrence short ball in fading light in Bristol during a tour match against Gloucestershire.

PM opens debate on CCJ bills

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller this afternoon opened the debate on three Bills proposing to replace the Privy Council with the Caribbean Court of Justice as Jamaica’s final court.

Jamaica has already signed on to the court’s original division but not to its appellate division.

Prime Minister Simpson Miller argued that moving away from the United Kingdom-based Privy Council is a key decision for Jamaica’s sovereignty.
