Customs seize more than US$50,000 from traveller

The Customs Department has seized more than US$50,000 from a traveller who arrived at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay on Monday.



The department said based on Intelligence techniques members of the Cargo Imaging Team interviewed a passenger who arrived on an American Airlines Flight.



The passenger had completed his Customs Declaration Form and also made a verbal declaration that he had only clothing in his bags.



However the department said on close examination of his bags, it was discovered that items other than clothing were included.



The bags were put through the x-ray machine and upon further examination, a creamer and popcorn containers were opened and an amount of US$53,800 was found in false compartments.



The passenger was searched an additional amount of US$4,000 was recovered from his person.



The currency was confiscated pending further investigation.
