Labour Minister proposes measures for dispute referrals

The minister has proposed measures to contain the likely increase in the number of labour disputes that may be referred to the ministry.

The labour minister says Norman Wright, Q.C, has been appointed chairman of the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT) effective October 1.

He also says the number of deputy chairmen will be increased from one to two.

The proposed appointees are Charles Jones, former chief personnel of the Office of the Services Commission and Clinton Davis who previously served as the deputy IDT chairman.

Mr Charles says a deputy chairman is to be appointed to undertake preliminary hearings before the cases reach the IDT.

In addition Mr Charles says an IDT panel will be set up in Montego Bay to deal with cases from western Jamaica eliminating the need for aggrieved parties from that section of the island to travel to Kingston.
