Still no plan for Students’ Loan Bureau funding
Education Minister, Ronald Thwaites, says there is still no comprehensive plan for financing the Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB).
He was speaking in a debate on a motion on the SLB brought by North West St Ann MP, Dr Dayton Campbell this afternoon.
Thwaites said one of the options being looked at is the establishment of a fund similar to the National Housing Trust to finance tertiary education.
Thwaites is also advocating for the SLB to begin charging interest on the reducing balance and for the monthly repayment figure to be based on the salary of debtors.
The education minister has also taken issue with the guarantor system saying it sometimes places women in situations where they become victimised by their guarantors.
Thwaites is also urging parents to plan and save for their children’s tertiary education.
The motion has now been referred to the Human Resource and Social Development Committee of Parliament.
