ST CATHERINE, Jamaica:

The Guys Hill High School in St Catherine is to be reopened next Monday.

The school was closed on Monday following a chemical spill in the vicinity of the institution.

The noxious fumes caused a number of students to faint.

It was later discovered that the fumes emanated from a pesticide which had leaked from a garbage truck along three kilometres of roadway in the vicinity of the Guys Hill Town Square and the school.

Acting Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) Richard Thompson says remedial work have been done.

He has given the go-ahead for classes to resume.

The clean-up was coordinated by the National Solid Waste Management Authority in collaboration with ODPEM, the National Environment and Planning Agency, and the Pesticide Control Division.
