Prime Minister, Bruce Golding has ordered the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), to review the national disaster preparedness plan.

Mr. Golding said this is necessary to enhance and improve the country’s prevention and response capabilities.

Mr. Golding wants ODPEM to look specifically at what can be done to minimise damage, and enable a more timely and effective response to disasters.

According to Mr. Golding more needs to be done to reduce the length of time it takes government agencies to provide relief to residents affected by disasters.

The Prime Minister also called for residents of St. Catherine and Clarendon who were severely affected by Hurricane Dean to be given priority attention for relocation.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Security disbursed $226 million to beneficiaries of 377 households affected by Hurricane Dean last year.

The Labour Ministry reported that disbursement of cheques to more than 12,000 households began on Wednesday.
