Gas tax for Jamaica

Published:Thursday | April 23, 2009 | 5:11 PM

Finance Minister Audley Shaw has announced that a gas tax is coming as part of measures to finance the $18.13 billion gap in the Budget.

He has also announced that GCT on telephone instruments would be moved from 16.5 percent to 20 percent come Monday morning.

Financial analyst, Ralston Hyman believes the announcement of a fuel tax will place more pressure on consumers even though the income tax threshold is to be doubled.

Additionally Mr. Hyman says the finance minister failed to say how the administration will be dealing with its external account.
