Crash claims Morant Bay High School student

PORT MORANT, St Thomas:

THE SUMMER holidays got off to a tragic start for residents of Port Morant in St Thomas, after a crash left one teenager dead and three others, including the driver injured.

Dead is 14-year-old Javi-Anna Moore, who attended Morant Bay High School.

According to reports, Moore and her two friends went on a trip to a fishing district on Harbour Head Road. One of the students who was involved in the crash told The Gleaner that while on their way back from the trip, a Honda CRV which was being driven by a teenage boy who they knew, pulled up beside them and offered them a ride home. She noted that two passengers were in the car when they accepted the ride.

She said the driver swerved to avoid a pothole and lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a tree. Passers-by and citizens rushed them to the hospital.

When The Gleaner visited the Princess Margaret hospital, family members, relatives hospital staff and onlookers converged in front of the emergency department.

Meanwhile, Corporal Donovan Gordon who is attached to the Community Safety and Security Department of the Morant Bay police said Monday was a sad day for St Thomas. He noted that statistics show that more children get hurt during the summer holidays As such, Gordon urged youngsters to listen to their parents and avoid individuals who are likely to negatively influence them.

The cop also urged parents to be extra vigilant during this time and go the extra mile to ensure that their children stay safe.

The police are waiting for the driver to be released from hospital to interview and posssibly charge him.
