Jamaica to get another mobile provider
Jamaica is to get another mobile telecommunications service provider.
Finance Minister Audley Shaw says the Cabinet has approved the granting of the licence to the operator but did not name the company.
The finance minister appeared before the Standing Finance Committee of Parliament on Tuesday afternoon on behalf of the Technology Minister, Dr Andrew Wheatley who is overseas on government business.
The committee is examining the Estimates of Expenditure for 2016/17.
Currently, there are two major telecommunications players in Jamaica.
In January, then technology minister, Phillip Paulwell said the cabinet was considering an application for a new cellular licence.
At that time, Paulwell said the granting of the new licence would broaden competition in the telecommunications industry.
