Years after retiring from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), two former district constables say they are still without their full pensions, leaving them in financial distress and demanding answers. Derrick Foster told The Gleaner he spent 36 years in the JCF working at the Pedro Plains Police Station in St Elizabeth before retiring. Two years after his retirement, he said, he received an interim payment of about $800,000, which was intended to suffice until his final pension payment.

US military says it killed four in strike on alleged drug-smuggling boat in the Caribbean

WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States military attacked a boat suspected of being used to smuggle drugs in the Caribbean Sea on Tuesday, killing four people, as the Trump administration continues its monthslong campaign against alleged traffickers in Latin America. The latest attack brings the number of people who have been killed in boat strikes by the US military to at least 227 in 68 strikes since the Trump administration began targeting those it calls “narcoterrorists” almost a year ago.

Rodney Memorial building in Spanish Town robbed

The police have launched an investigation into a break-in and robbery at the Rodney Memorial building in Spanish Town, St Catherine, where thieves made off with several items valued at more than $1 million. The building houses several government entities. The police report that caretakers arrived at the building on Monday and found the locks smashed. Checks revealed that two air-conditioning units were stolen from an old court office.

NWC: Water rationing for St Ann, St Mary and Portland due to drought

The National Water Commission (NWC) says it has been forced to regulate water supplied to customers in St Ann, St Mary and Portland as its facilities in these parishes are being impacted by drought conditions. The NWC, in a media release on Wednesday, said it is seeing declining inflows at surface water sources. As a result, the commission said some systems are currently producing between 10 and 50 per cent of their normal output, while others are completely out of operation.

UNCERTAIN FUTURE

Principal of Cumberland High School Carlon Pitt says he remains uncertain whether veteran track and field coach Corey Bennett will become part of the institution’s sporting programme when the school’s merger with Hydel High School takes effect in September. Pitt said several matters still need to be resolved before he can confirm whether Bennett, the former head coach at Hydel, will join Cumberland’s coaching staff. “There are some dynamics to be worked out which are above our heads, and so when those issues are worked out, then I can comment publicly on it,” Pitt said.

Atlantic growing amid rebuilding

Atlantic Hardware & Plumbing Company Ltd (AHPC) expects to deliver double-digit growth this year as post-Hurricane Melissa rebuilding demand and a new agro-distribution business combine to push the Junior Market-listed company to record levels. AHPC generated revenue of $776.4 million in the April-to-June quarter, up 92 per cent from $404.8 million a year earlier, while net profit surged 140 per cent to $42 million from $17.5 million. For the six months to June, sales climbed 69 per cent to $1.46 billion and net profit jumped 243 per cent to $116.3 million.

Editorial | Conversation on the drought

As the aphorism goes, it’s better late than never. So, while Jamaica’s policymakers may have fumbled the earlier opportunity, there are compelling reasons to still act on Professor Michael Taylor’s suggestion that Jamaica prepare for droughts and associated crises, similar to how it plans for hurricanes. The science is available to do so. “We would never wait until hurricane-force winds begin blowing to decide we should prepare for a hurricane,” he wrote in this newspaper on Sunday. “Let us stop waiting until the taps run dry to prepare for drought.”
