Mary Jane’s* 12-year-old daughter has Down’s syndrome, is autistic and cognitively delayed, and will require medical care for the rest of her life. Determined to provide for her daughter’s future, the retired Jamaican entrepreneur, now living in the United States, had built a US$80,000 nest egg by 2021 to cover her future medical needs. She began exploring short-term investments as a way to increase her savings and that’s when a friend introduced her to Delta Capital Partners, Jane recounted during an interview with The Sunday Gleaner last Wednesday.

$500,000 bail for Spanish Town man charged over car with altered chassis number

A St Catherine man charged with driving a car bearing a tampered chassis number was on Friday granted $500,000 bail in the parish court. Michael Williams, 32, of a Spanish Town address, is answering a charge of unlawful possession of property. In applying for bail, attorney-at-law Earl Hamilton said his client has nothing to hide and had no knowledge that anything illegal had been done to the motor car.

Water outage at UK’s Gatwick airport leaves toilets out of order and restaurants closed

LONDON (AP) — A power outage at a water treatment plant in south east England left toilets out of order and forced the closure of restaurants at Gatwick Airport on Sunday. The airport, south of London, apologised on X for the inconvenience to passengers using both terminals. SES Water said it was working to restore service after a power outage at its Bough Beech Water Treatment Works caused a drop in pressure and temporary water loss for some customers in Kent and Sussex counties.

Egg farmers count millions in losses as heat stress takes toll on chickens

The higher temperatures affecting Jamaica are taking a toll on the country's egg farmers, with bird deaths mounting and egg production declining, says the president of the Jamaica Egg Farmers Association (JEFA), Mark Campbell. In an interview with The Gleaner, Campbell indicated that farmers across the island have so far reported a combined total of 1,200 chickens dying as a result of the heat. “This figure represents a total of a potential loss of 3,600 boxes [of eggs]. That calculates to $18 million in revenue loss."

Hotel pipeline tops US$4.2b, but brand name projects face delays

Jamaica has facilitated more than US$4.2 billion in hotel investments through JAMPRO, but roughly 10 per cent of the pipeline remains delayed, including a Marriott-branded property in Trelawny. These projects – facilitated in the fiscal year that ended in March – are expected to deliver 8,943 new hotel rooms and create an estimated 25,705 jobs, according to Government of Jamaica filings this month to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. The investments are part of a broader effort to rebuild a sector disrupted by Hurricane Melissa last October.
