Children abandoned - Five young ones among 60 patients deserted by relatives

Four of the five children abandoned at the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine have spent their entire lives at the facility, a situation Chief Executive Officer Jacqueline Ellis says is unacceptable. The latest child – a male who is one and a half years old – has remained at the hospital 11 months after being discharged. Hospital records show that four of the children – whose ages range from 10 months to two and a half years old – were left by their parents shortly after birth to be adopted. The other child was left there for “care and protection”.

NEW YORK (AP) – Serena and Venus Williams are teaming up again at the US Open. The sisters will play doubles at the tournament after receiving a wild card Wednesday into the event they won twice. Serena Williams returned to tennis this summer after a four-year absence, and the sisters were set to play at Wimbledon before Serena had to withdraw after injuring her knee in her singles loss. They played in the Cincinnati Open, losing in the first round.

The settlement resolves a pivotal legal case years in the making that sought to hold the tech giant accountable for the role its platforms played in undermining children's mental health. The effort targeted features designed to hook young people's attention.

PENSION PAIN

Years after retiring from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), two former district constables say they are still without their full pensions, leaving them in financial distress and demanding answers. Derrick Foster told The Gleaner he spent 36 years in the JCF working at the Pedro Plains Police Station in St Elizabeth before retiring. Two years after his retirement, he said, he received an interim payment of about $800,000, which was intended to suffice until his final pension payment.

Principal of Cumberland High School Carlon Pitt says he remains uncertain whether veteran track and field coach Corey Bennett will become part of the institution’s sporting programme when the school’s merger with Hydel High School takes effect in September. Pitt said several matters still need to be resolved before he can confirm whether Bennett, the former head coach at Hydel, will join Cumberland’s coaching staff. “There are some dynamics to be worked out which are above our heads, and so when those issues are worked out, then I can comment publicly on it,” Pitt said.

Editorial | Conversation on the drought

As the aphorism goes, it’s better late than never. So, while Jamaica’s policymakers may have fumbled the earlier opportunity, there are compelling reasons to still act on Professor Michael Taylor’s suggestion that Jamaica prepare for droughts and associated crises, similar to how it plans for hurricanes. The science is available to do so. “We would never wait until hurricane-force winds begin blowing to decide we should prepare for a hurricane,” he wrote in this newspaper on Sunday. “Let us stop waiting until the taps run dry to prepare for drought.”
