Are doctors accountable?
THE EDITOR, Madam:
“Many more will have to suffer, many more will have to die?” These are the lines from a song from the King of Reggae – Bob Marley.
I have heard of politicians, bankers, lawyers, teachers and our hard-working members of the security forces, who have gone to prison for one reason or the other. So why is it I have never heard of a medical doctor or nurse losing their licence to practise in Jamaica or even going to prison.
My suggestions are:
1. We need accountability in this country for everyone.
2. We need a non-political oversight body for doctors and nurses to redress complaints.
3. Most importantly, they need to be charged for negligence.
Unfortunately, the medical services in these hospitals are going from bad to worse each day, while some of the staff are negligent and act indifferent, especially towards the poor and vulnerable patients. This needs to change.
