The Galil rifle recovered in Rockfort, east Kingston this morning.

The recovery of a Galil rifle, registered to the Haitian National Police, has left cops in east Kingston concerned about the strength of the ongoing firearms trade between Haiti and Jamaica.

Inspector Dhalia Garrick of the police's Corporate Communications Unit says the gun, which is very similar to an M16 rifle, was recovered in Rockfort early this morning during a shootout with gangsters.

The police are maintaining a heavy presence in the community where gang violence has re-emerged in recent weeks.

Inspector Garrick says the police responded to sounds of explosions in the community about 2 a.m., where a man was found suffering from gunshot wounds along Peter's Road. They attempted to assist the man, but came under attack  by gunmen.

Inspector Garrick says the police responded and after the shooting, the Galil rifle was discovered.
