Lionel Reid, one of Jamaica's most passionate advocates for small hotel operators and a stalwart in the tourism industry, has died.

Reid, who served as president of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) from 1993 to 1997, passed away early this morning at a hospital in Montego Bay, St James.

He was 89.

A respected figure in the hospitality sector, Reid dedicated much of his career to championing the interests of small and independent hoteliers, ensuring their inclusion in national tourism development plans.

He was one of the longest-serving chairmen of Jamaica Vacations (JAMVAC), playing a crucial role in promoting Jamaica.

Despite battling health challenges for several years, Reid remained a revered figure in the industry.

He has been remembered for his wisdom, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to Jamaica's tourism sector.

Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett, hailed Reid as “the quintessential tourism entrepreneur, administrator, thinker, and advocate,” noting his immense contribution to Jamaica's tourism development over nearly half a century.

"The pride that Lionel Reid showed in executing his duties in tourism is absolutely unmatched," Bartlett said.

"His role in creating the foundations for Jamaica's airlift security, particularly in negotiations with American Airlines, helped establish more than 200 gateways connecting us across the United States."

Describing him as “a consummate gentleman, a great family man, and an outstanding tourism personality,” Bartlett extended condolences to Reid's wife, Veronica, and his children, Paula and Andrew.
