A St Catherine man who pleaded guilty to using the seal of a justice of the peace (JP) to illegally certify several documents was ordered to pay a fine of $350,000 or spend 21 months in prison on Tuesday in the St Catherine Parish Court.

The man, Mark Anderson, was charged with unauthorised possession of a justice of the peace seal and unauthorised use of a justice of the peace seal.

Anderson was fined $200,000 or 12 months' imprisonment on the possession charge and $150,000 or nine months' imprisonment for unauthorised use of the seal.

The court was told that in August 2024, an intelligence-driven operation by the police led to Anderson's arrest in the Spanish Town bus park along Burke Road.

The seal was reportedly confiscated by the police and further investigation led to the arrest of a justice of the peace on a charge of permitting the unauthorised use of the JP seal.

The Crown offered no evidence against the JP and he was discharged.
