The People's National Party (PNP) has paid tribute to Pope Francis, saying "his life was a testament to spiritual devotion, moral clarity, and a tireless, progressive commitment to unity and human dignity."

“To the Catholic community across Jamaica, I offer heartfelt sympathies during this time of reflection and mourning. May you find comfort in the Pope's enduring legacy of compassion, humility, and faith,” said PNP President and Leader of the Opposition Mark Golding.

He noted that, here in Jamaica, the Catholic Church holds a respected place in the country's cultural and spiritual life.

He said for generations, Jamaican Catholics have contributed significantly to nation-building through education, health care, community service, and the arts, guided by the values and teachings of the Holy See.

"May his soul rest in peace, and may his example continue to inspire all who strive for a more just and loving world," the PNP president said in a media release Monday.

Pope Francis died on Monday at age 88.

Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man, was admitted to Gemelli hospital on February 14, 2025, for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there, the longest hospitalisation of his 12-year papacy.

But he emerged on Easter Sunday — his last public appearance, a day before his death — to bless thousands of people in St Peter's Square and treat them to a surprise popemobile romp through the piazza, drawing wild cheers and applause.
