St Catherine mechanic charged for allegedly attempting to use post office to smuggle ganja
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) is reporting that its crackdown on persons attempting to use courier services to traffic drugs continues to bear fruit, with the arrest of a man in St Catherine.
In a targeted operation against the use of courier services for drug export, 51-year-old Jayson Josephs, a mechanic of Wakefield district, Linstead, St Catherine, has been arrested and charged with multiple offences.
The police report that on January 29 this year, Josephs attempted to send a package labelled "All Purpose Seasoning" to London from a post office in St Catherine.
During routine security screening, anomalies were detected, prompting the involvement of the police's Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division (FNID).
A search of the parcel revealed eight ounces of ganja.
Following an operation on Thursday, July 10, Josephs was apprehended.
He was subsequently charged with possession of ganja, dealing in ganja, attempting to export ganja, and conspiracy to export ganja.
The police say the FNID is investigating more than 100 cases since the start of the year in which drugs have been found in packages sent through courier services.
Acting Senior Superintendent of Police Patrae Rowe, Director of the FNID, reiterated the division's commitment to disrupting the movement of illicit drugs, particularly through courier services.
"We are aware of the modus operandi of individuals who are moving and trading drugs within our borders, and we are intensifying our efforts to ensure they are apprehended and face the full force of the law."
The JCF urges the public to continue assisting in their efforts by reporting individuals involved in the drug trade or any suspicious activities.
Tips can be provided by calling FNID at 876-923-6184, the National Intelligence Bureau at 811, Crime Stop at 311, or the nearest police station.
