Independent candidate in Westmoreland Eastern, Derrick 'Black X' Robinson, says his credibility has been undermined after his election symbol was changed without his consent.

Robinson, who has no larynx (voice box) following an operation, spoke to The Gleaner through his interpreter, Lorraine McPherson.

He insisted that his team had formally secured the heart as his symbol, only to discover this morning that it was replaced by the lion.

“On nomination day we requested the symbol of the heart. It was done by letter before and on nomination day we signed for the symbol of the heart,” Robinson explained. “However this morning (September 3) we saw that we were giving the symbol of the lion and our voters are disgruntled. They are disappointed.”

He said the change created confusion among his supporters. “We do not understand why that was done because we have publicly let everyone know that this (the heart) was the symbol we’ll be using. And so people were confused and not sure what to do… our credibility is at stake.”

Robinson is demanding accountability from election officials. “We asked that the EOJ do something about this, something credible, something serious because it cannot be that a member of parliament in waiting is feeling cheated because of their mishap.”
