The Kingston East police have arrested and charged a man alleged to have used an axe to murder a woman in Vineyard Town on Sunday.

The accused is 20-year-old Kevin Williams of Second Avenue, Vineyard Town.

The Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force says the accused and the victim, 58-year-old Rosemarie Samuels, with whom he shared accommodation, had a dispute over money.

It is alleged that Williams left the premises and returned with an axe, which he used to inflict multiple wounds on Samuels.

The police were summoned, and Samuels was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Williams was subsequently arrested and formally charged on Monday with murder.

Crime Officer for the Kingston East Division, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Keaton Barrett, commended the investigators for their quick response to the incident.

“The swift action in this case, resulting in the suspect being arrested and charged in less than 24 hours, underscores our commitment to bringing closure to the families. We take violent crimes seriously and will spare no effort in ensuring criminals are brought before the courts as soon as possible,” said DSP Barrett.

Williams' court date is being finalised.
