JFF hails Donald Oliver as erudite commentator who brought sporting events to life

The Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) has expressed condolences following the passing of respected sports broadcaster Donald Oliver, describing him as an erudite commentator who contributed significantly to sports broadcasting in Jamaica.
Oliver, 40, died suddenly on Tuesday morning.
In a statement, the JFF extended sympathy to Oliver’s family and friends, as well as to the wider football fraternity.
The federation noted that Oliver was a familiar voice and face in local sports commentary, particularly football.
Over the years, he worked with several mainstream media entities across Jamaica and the region, providing lead commentary for major competitions, including the schoolboy football competitions, the Jamaica Premier League, and Reggae Boyz matches in the CONCACAF Nations League and select international friendlies.
The JFF said he was widely admired for a commentary style that brought games to life, captivating audiences with vivid descriptions of goals, players, and match-day atmospheres.
Beyond football, Oliver covered a wide range of international sporting events, including the Summer and Winter Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games.
His work earned him several accolades, among them the Prime Minister’s Youth Award in Journalism in 2009 and the Press Association of Jamaica’s Best Television Feature/Documentary award in 2022.
Interim General Secretary of the JFF, Roy Simpson, in paying tribute to Oliver, describing him as a commentator of exceptional talent.
“Donald Oliver was the Jamaican Peter Drury. Listening to him commentate was a joy, and he represented us all as Jamaicans proudly,” Simpson said.
“I first met Donald Oliver in 2010 during the 2010 FIFA World Cup at CVM-TV, and from then on I knew of his ability. I am deeply distraught to hear of his passing and extend condolences to the entire sporting fraternity for the loss of an erudite football commentator.”
