A 17-year-old boy was freed of a murder charge in the St Catherine Circuit Court on Tuesday after the prosecution conceded it could not disprove that he acted in self-defence.
The charge related to the case of 16-year-old Zaveer Edwards of Homestead, Spanish Town, St Catherine, who died following a stabbing incident on May 29, 2024.
At the close of the prosecution’s case, defence attorney Denise Hinson successfully submitted that the prosecution had failed to displace self-defence. The prosecution conceded and the court freed the boy.
According to the allegations, the accused and Edwards became involved in an altercation in Homestead that escalated into a physical confrontation.
During the incident, the then accused was reportedly struck repeatedly on his back and other parts of his body.
Edwards was stabbed once during the fight and was taken to hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, the then accused was arrested and charged with murder.
He made multiple court appearances and maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
