Four people, including 92-y-o woman, killed in weekend crashes

“Skidding” and “losing control” were cited as the possible causes for two motor vehicle crashes in Trelawny on the weekend that left three people dead, including a 92-year-old woman.
A woman was also killed in a collision involving two vehicles in St Catherine on Sunday, pushing the weekend road fatalities to four.
The names of the victims were not disclosed in a police report on Monday about the three fatal crashes.
“It’s a travesty that after living so long, a 92-year-old woman should die in a crash,” said Dr Lucien Jones, vice-chairman of the advocacy group, National Road Safety Council.
“Terrible! It should trouble our collective conscience,” he added.
The elderly woman was a passenger in a car that collided with a motor truck along the Scarlet Hall main road in Trelawny about 5 p.m. on Saturday, according to the police report.
The police listed skidding, losing control and failing to keep to the “nearside/proper traffic lane” as possible causes of the crash.
The same reasons were cited for a collision between a car and a sport utility vehicle (SUV) about 7:10 a.m. on Sunday that claimed the lives of two men.
The crash happened along the Carey Park main road.
The second fatal crash on Sunday happened about 8:20 a.m. along St John’s Road in the community of Ebonyvale.
It claimed the life of a woman who was a passenger in a private motor car that collided with a SUV.
Overtaking improperly on the offside of the roadway, losing control and misjudging clearance, disaster or speed were cited as the possible causes.
Three people have died in two fatal crashes so far this month, police statistics show.
A total of 22 people died on Jamaica’s roadways in January, pushing the national death toll to 25 since the start of the year.
