Four persons were arrested on Tuesday after a vessel laden with a large quantity of ganja was intercepted by the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Coast Guard offshore Manchester.
In a statement, the JDF said the weed weighed more than 2,286.75 pounds and has an estimated street value of approximately $45 million.
The vessel was intercepted southwest of Long Bay Beach in Manchester.
The JDF reported that its First and Second District Coast Guard units were conducting routine patrols along Jamaica’s southern coastline when they detected a suspicious vessel near the Farquhar’s Beach area in Clarendon.
A coordinated pursuit ensued and ended with the successful interception of the vessel, the JDF said.
It stated that a detailed search of the vessel revealed 38 knitted bags containing marijuana and several 200-gallon fuel drums.
Four persons were detained in connection with the seizure.
The individuals and the marijuana were handed over to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division for processing.
