A total of 23 post offices are currently in contract to undergo significant upgrades aimed at enhancing service delivery to communities across the island.
Executive Director of the National Identification and Registration Authority, Dr Warren Vernon, explained that the initiative is being managed by the National Identification System Project under the Office of the Prime Minister.
“I am aware that the Montego Bay location is somewhere about 70 per cent complete, and work resumed to finish the other sections that are required for the integration of civil registrations, like births, marriages, deaths… into a single location. That location we expect to be completed by June of this year.
“What we also know is that the Mandeville location is pretty much at the same stage. The last report we received is that it’s about 80 per cent complete. They are pretty advanced in doing similar works for the integration of civil registration services. The Spaulding location, I know, is somewhere about 75 per cent complete… and the Ocho Rios location, by now, is about 80 per cent complete… at the Ocho Rios post office,” Dr Vernon added.
He also reported that construction is currently under way at the St Ann’s Bay Post Office, while in Portland, the contract has been signed and work is expected to begin soon to modify that facility.
“In Kingston, if you should go to the Constant Spring Post Office, you will see that it’s an active construction site. Likewise, the Mona Post Office and the Half-Way Tree Post Office… we have active construction sites there. The contractor would have started some initial activities in St Thomas, to work on two locations in [the parish] for us to facilitate national identification and civil registration services,” Vernon said.
“So, we are bringing civil registration services and national ID services to St Thomas. In the past, persons from St Thomas, outside of registration at the hospitals, used to either go to Portland or come into Kingston (Duke Street) for civil registration services,” he added.
Vernon also disclosed that work at the Lucea Post Office in Hanover is at an advanced stage, while upgrades are progressing at facilities in Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth; May Pen, Clarendon; Browns Town, St Ann; and Port Maria, St Mary.
