Western Bureau:

After Hurricane Melissa, with all the fury of its 195-mile-per-hour winds, many Jamaicans emerged as heroes in numerous communities, especially in western Jamaica, risking their lives to help and protect others from potential dangers amid roofs flying and persons being trapped.

In a show of gratitude during their monthly meeting on March 8, the Bogue Heights Citizens’ Association (BHCA) in St James honoured the hurricane heroes of its communities who played a pivotal role in helping others.

“The Bogue Heights Citizens’ Association proudly recognised outstanding residents and association members who volunteered selflessly in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa,” said Karlene Maye, the association’s president.

The various heroes, who were hands-on in their involvement in the distribution of tarpaulin, supported the efforts of the World Central Kitchen, and participated in the distribution of reconstruction materials and bottled drinking water, among many other outreach efforts, were presented with certificates of appreciation alongside well-deserved words of commendation.

Maye said the effort of the heroes expanded beyond each of their communities, as they also assisted in neighbouring communities that were severely affected by the hurricane.

MASSIVE PROJECT

In one example, on December 21 last year, the BHCA forged a partnership with the neighbouring Bogue Village Citizens’ Association and took on a massive project through which items were distributed to persons impacted by the hurricane.

“Between the hours of 12 p.m. and 5 p.m., we distributed food supplies, clothing, and other essential items to residents of Bogue Hill,” said Maye, who noted that the recipients expressed gratitude and visible relief.

“They said they received the supplies at a time when it was most needed.

“The atmosphere was one of renewed hope, as volunteers were welcomed and community members expressed deep appreciation for the kindness and support shown.”

For many years, Bogue Heights has been seen as a shining example to communities across St James. The residents take great pride in keeping their community clean by demanding that the various agencies meet their obligations to them.

With the BHCA providing leadership and the citizens taking their civic duties seriously, Maye said she was confident that Bogue Heights will continue to play a major role in the ongoing effort to rebound from the devastation brought on by Melissa.

“The BHCA remains committed to supporting surrounding communities as recovery continues, recognising that the effects of the disaster are expected to impact many families for months to come,” said Maye.
