For Chantal McLean, the journey into publishing was not born in a classroom or corporate office; it was shaped in one of the most emotionally complex periods of her life. Today, through Dee D’s Creative Publishing, she is helping women transform their stories into tools for healing, but her mission began with loss, motherhood, and the search for purpose.

McLean’s story begins during what should have been one of the most joyful moments of her life, pregnancy. Instead, it became a period marked by grief.

“Losing my mother during my pregnancy was one of the most life-changing and grounding experiences I have ever faced. She was the person I looked to for safety, protection, and unconditional love and, suddenly, she was no longer there,” she said.

At the same time, she was preparing to become a mother herself, a dual experience that forced her into a new reality. “I realised that I now had to become the kind of mother my own mother was to me, her strength, her love, and her resilience became the foundation for how I chose to raise my son,” McLean said.

What could have been a period of emotional paralysis instead became a turning point. In the midst of grief, McLean found solace in journalling, a practice that would later shape her career. “Journalling became my safe space. It gave me the freedom to express everything I was feeling, without fear of judgement or feeling like I was becoming a burden to others,” she said.

With family members grieving in their own ways, writing became her outlet for processing overwhelming emotions, anger, sadness, confusion, and even guilt. “It was a place where I could be completely honest with myself, releasing my pain in a healthy and private way,” she said.

At the same time, she was preparing for motherhood and made a conscious decision. “I realised that I had to take responsibility for my healing. I wanted to be the best version of myself so I could love and care for him fully,” McLean said.

The shift from personal healing to public purpose came unexpectedly, through her first journal. “I realised this when I completed my first journal, the self-love journal where I struggled with insecurities about my body and even questioned myself as a mother,” she said.

Like many women, Chantal faced postpartum changes and self-doubt, as her body had changed after pregnancy. “I felt ashamed at times, and this led me to begin writing down each insecurity and then speaking positive affirmations over myself,” she said.

That process became transformative, and helped her to rebuild her confidence and shifted her mindset. She realised that, if journalling could help her heal, she could do the same for other women. That realisation became the foundation for her business.

EMOTIONAL SIGNIFICANCE

The name of her company, Dee D’s Creative Publishing, carries deep emotional significance. “‘Dee’ was my mother’s nickname, and I chose to build this business in her honour. This business represents her strength, her sacrifices, and the values she instilled in me,” she said.

What started as a personal coping mechanism evolved into a platform designed to empower women, especially mothers, to find independence and healing through storytelling. “I wanted to build something, not just for me, but for other women as well,” McLean said.

Her work soon expanded beyond her own story, as she began mentoring aspiring authors. “I realised that my platform could help other women bring their ideas to life. It’s about creating space for other women to step into theirs,” she said.

At its core, McLean’s platform is about more than publishing, it is about emotional healing. She recognises a reality that many women face. “A lot of women are carrying silent emotional weight while still showing up for everyone else,” she said.

Through guided journals, she aims to bridge that gap between internal struggle and self-expression. “When women are able to put their experiences into words, it helps them make sense of their journey and reclaim their voice,” McLean said.

Each of McLean’s journals reflects a different stage of emotional healing. Her postpartum journal, for example, blends emotional and practical support. “It includes a postpartum Bingo chart, and a baby milestone tracker, so mothers can stay present while caring for their own well-being,” she said.

Her grief journal, on the other hand, focuses on emotional safety. “I didn’t want to guide people out of grief quickly. I wanted it to feel like a quiet place where someone can show up exactly as they are,” she said.

The response to her journals has been deeply personal and affirming. “Many women have shared that the journals helped them finally express feelings they had been holding in for years. They felt seen in a way they hadn’t before,” McLean said.

From loss to legacy, Chantal McLean’s journey is a testament to resilience, healing, and purpose. Through Dee D’s Creative Publishing, she has created more than a business, she has built a space where women can process, heal, and grow.

Her story is a reminder that, even in life’s most painful moments, purpose can emerge and, through that purpose, others can find their own path to healing.
