A St Andrew event promoter was today fined a total of $110,000 in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court after pleading guilty to attempting to bribe police officers who turned up to shut down a party in Bowden Hill, Stony Hill, that was being held without authorisation.

Ian Parkes was fined $100,000 or 30 days’ imprisonment for bribery and an additional $10,000 or 30 days’ imprisonment in connection with the illegal event.

As part of the proceedings, the presiding parish judge instructed Parkes to apologise to the police officer involved.

Parkes complied and offered an apology in court.

The court heard that police officers responded to an event in Bowden Hill, Stony Hill, shortly before midnight on May 2 and took steps to bring the party to an end.

It was during that operation that Parkes attempted to influence one of the officers by offering the officer $10,000.

He was subsequently arrested and charged.
