The Jamaica Boxing Board will add a new element to its Gloves for Guns inner-city initiative tonight when in association with Jamaican promoting company Creative Sports and Uprising Promotions from the USA, they will add three professional fights to the amateur boxing card. There will be four amateur bouts, three of which will feature young boxers from the Fight for Peace programme. The pro boxers will be from Jamaica, Russia, Mexico, the USA, and Venezuela. The venue is the Ambassador Theatre in Trench Town, and the action starts at 7 p.m.

The feature bout on the card will be a heavyweight contest between Russian boxer Vladimir Tereshkin and Venezuelan Williams Ocando. There will also be two lightweight contests.

One will see Headley ‘The Light’ Scott from Atlanta, Georgia, going up against Mexican Jesús Laguna, while in the other, Jamaican Toriano Nicholas will trade punches with American Carlos Dixon.

Scott, who is a Rastafarian, has Jamaican ties and told The Gleaner that he was very happy to be fighting in the homeland of his grandparents and his mother. He said that he hopes to boost his 13-1 record with a good win.

Tereshkin and Ocando will be fighting for a special World Boxing Council (WBC) medal, and the bout is scheduled for 12 rounds. The winner of the fight will be given the opportunity to fight for a WBC Silver belt later this year. Tereshkin, who has an impressive 20-0-1 record, said yesterday that after being absent from the ring for two years for personal reasons, he was happy to be back and was set to give a very good performance.

“I like the Jamaican people and will give them a good show,” was his promise. He is much bigger than his opponent Ocando, who has just graduated from the Cruiserweight division, with a 21-8 record.

Jamaica’s Toriano Nicholas will have his hands full against the fast-moving Dixon.

The amateur bouts will see Fight For Peace boxers from Trench Town, Fletcher’s Land, Parade Gardens, and Greenwich Town up against each other. Mario Allen will go against Everton Levy, Akeem Francis will take on Ajani Douglas, and Omar Phipps will challenge Anthony Creary. There will be one elite amateur bout, matching Trevor Thornton from the C.J. Boxing Club and Damion Williams from the Jamaica Defence Force.
