Hydel’s girls shine at Purewater meet
Hydel High’s girls showed good early form at the 28th staging of the Purewater/R. Danny Williams Invitational meet at the Ashenheim Stadium on the campus of Jamaica College last Saturday.
With defending ISSA Girls’ Championships Edwin Allen High pulling out at the last minute, it was a Hydel show on the female side while St Jago High, Kingston College, and host team Jamaica College shared honours among the boys. Head coach of Edwin Allen Michael Dyke pointed to internal issues, including financial problems, for the their late withdrawal from the meet.
World Under-20 200 metres representative Brianna Lyston led the way for Hydel. The former St Jago High sprinter who is now eligible to represent her new school at ‘Champs’ after sitting out a year, clocked the fastest 100 metres time among females on the day after winning the Class One 100 metres in 11.92 seconds in a negative wind of 1.2 metres per second. Alexis James of Petersfield High also went sub-12 seconds after finishing second overall in Class One in 11.93 while Lyston’s teammate, Oneika Wilson, was third overall in 12.05.
Jody Ann Daley gave Hydel top honours in Class Two after winning in 12.22. Hydel’s girls dominated the middle-distance events, topping all three classes in the 800 metres. Ricaria Campbell won Class Three in 2:22.93 minutes, and Taiefa Gowie won Class Two in 2:20.49 in a close finish over St Catherine High’s Jamora Patterson (2:20.62). In Class One, Dannelle King won in 2:17.35 as she edged out St Jago’s Alexis Douglas 2:17.37. Douglas reversed the placing in the 1500 metres, winning in 4:57.86 as King clocked 5:04.10 for second . St Jago’s girls also picked up wins in Class Three 80m hurdles as Camoy Burger clocked 11.48 seconds to win ahead of teammate Bryana Davidson, 11.54. Jamara Alves won the Class One shot put with a heave of 12.48 metres.
St Catherine High’s Natalia Albert was a very impressive winner in the javelin throw open for girls with 34.54 metres. Her teammate, Rihana Chambers, won the Class Three long jump with 5.49 metres.
ST JAGO BOYS DOMINATE HURDLES
Led by Jahvel Granville, who won the Class One 110m hurdles in 14.07 seconds over Calabar High’s Dishawn Lamb, 14.35, St Jago’s boys dominated the hurdles. Michael Dwyer won the Class Three 100m hurdles in 14.01, and teammate Brandon Harris took home the Class Two 400m hurdles in 54.12 seconds. Tafar Hinds was also impressive for St Jago in the 800 metres, winning the Class One event in 1:54.63.
Kingston College picked up two top-two finishes. First, Daniel Clarke, with a 14.40 seconds clocking, won the Class Two 110m hurdles ahead of teammate Jordan Campbell, second in 14.47. Nahashon Ruto then won the Class Three 1500m in 4:33.52 ahead of Jevanne Robinson, 4:42.58. Ruto had double success on the day as he captured the Class Two 800m in 2:06.38.
Host team Jamaica College had successes in the 1500m and long jump. Handel Roban clocked 3:56.78 to win the Class One 1500m ahead of teammate Jevaughn Blake, 3:58.79. Tyrone Lawson won Class Two in 4:12.64. Uroy Ryan won the Class One long jump with a leap of 7.23 metres and Michael Edwards triumphed in Class Three with a best of 5.58 metres.
