Three score centuries in BH cricket league
Rain disrupted play in the seventh-round matches in the Reggae Jammin-sponsored 50-over Business House cricket league last Sunday, as only one of the four matches scheduled was played.
Over the past two rounds, however, three players have recorded centuries. They are Digicel's Jowayne Robinson, who hit an unbeaten 119 in a losing cause against OCS Electrical at Kensington Park last Sunday, LIME's Ryan Francis with a level 100 against Sagicor on July 11 at Chalmers Avenue, and Jamalco's Miguel Gordon 100 not out against Digicel at Kensington Park, also on July 11.
At KENSINGTON PARK: OCS Electrical and Digicel played to a tie, but OCS Electrical were declared winners by virtue of losing fewer wickets.
OCS Electrical 229 for 4 (Howard Harris 66 not out, former national player Delroy Morgan 64. Digicel 229 for six off their allotted overs - Jowayne Robinson batting at number three made 119 not out, Garfield Moore 64.
AT CHALMERS AVENUE: Defending champions LIME defeated Sagicor by 102 runs. Lime 276 for 4 (Ryan Francis 100, Omar Allison 36; Paul McKenzie 2-72. Sagicor 174 for 7 - Semaj McLean 76, Akeem Dewar 31; Dave Johnson 2-61.
AT KENSINGTON PARK (July 11): Jamalco 223 for 4 (Miguel Gordon 100 not out, Calvert Whittick 45), defeated Digicel 148 (Garfield Moore 60; Gordon 3-24) by 75 runs.
AT MICO: Jamaica Broilers beat NHT by six wickets. NHT 82, Jamalco 86 for 4 - Peter Caballero 25 not out, Robert Turner 20.
The competition continues tomorrow with four matches. These are OSC Electrical vs cup holders LIME at Maxfield Park, NHT vs NWC at Mico, Sagicor vs Jamaica Broilers at Chalmers Avenue and Continental Baking Company vs Digital at Jamaica College, all starting at 10 a.m.
Dragon Spitfire skittles quarter-finals
Three unbeaten teams have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Supreme ventures/Dragon Spitfitre seven-a-side skittles competition which gets under way tomorrow at The Dip in Gregory Park, starting at 1 p.m.
They are home team The Dip, Eagles and Eastern All-Stars. All three have won their respective zones, along with Mystic, who have topped Zone 'B' ahead of fellow qualifiers Dragon. The Dip have won Zone 'A' ahead of Mister C, Eastern All-Stars have won Zone 'C' ahead of Strainer with Eagles topping Zone 'D' ahead of Rowe's Strikers.
The quarter-final draw pits Eagles against Mister C from Spanish Town in the first match at 1 p.m., Eastern All-Stars vs Dragon in the second match, Mystic vs Strainer in the third and The Dip vs Rowe's Strikers in the fourth.
The Dip duly made it five in a row last Sunday with a 5-0 shoreline over Waltham Strikers at Mister C, while Mercury defeated Mister C 5-2 in their Spanish Town derby, but this did not prevent a home team Mister C from advancing.
Mystix, meanwhile, clipped Willies Strikers 4-3 at Olympic Gardens, while Dragon beat Olympic 4-3 (4-1) at the same venue. Eastern All-Stars blanked House of Peace 4-0 at Bejon's Sports Bar, Hughenden Plaza, while home team Eagles beat Meadowvale 4-2 at the same venue to finish with an unblemished record.
Seprod, Jamaica Brandy unbeaten in BH domino
Defending champions Seprod and Jamaica Brandy are the two unbeaten teams in Division I of the Wray & Nephew-sponsored Business House domino league after the fourth round of matches on Friday, July 16.
Seprod defeated Berger 130-122, while Jamaica Brandy beat SDC 148-136. In other Division I fourth-round matches, National Baking Company stopped JPS 131-104, while Wray & Nephew cooled Jamaica Fire Brigade 130-125.
In Division II, STATIN defeated Chas Ramson 138-106 to remain unbeaten. RJR Sports Club won their second match from three starts, drubbing Tastee 151-112, while Courts defeated UWI 150-141, NHT clipped NCB 149-146 and Norman Manley International Airport pipped Pepsi 146-144.
Eight games on in Portmore U-17 League
Eight games are on in the Pines Imaging Centre Portmore U-17 Football League tomorrow.
In Zone B action at Ferdie Neita Park, Daytona tackle Portmore United at 1 p.m. and East Portmore Portals take on Queens Park at 3 p.m.; at Watson Grove field, Waterford oppose Greater Portmore at 1 p.m. while Passagefort United play Watson Grove at 3 p.m. In Zone A action at the Portsmouth field, Braeton United battle Wanderers at 1 p.m., then at 3 p.m. Portsmouth welcome Dunbholden; at Racing field, Rodwood oppose Westport at 1 p.m., followed by Racing vs Southborough at 3 p.m.
Portmore cop U-15 crown
A double strike from Ishmail Curry carried Portmore United to a comprehensive 5-2 win over Cumberland in the final of the Senator Arthur Williams-sponsored Portmore U-15 Football League on Sunday. Andre Gutzmore opened the scoring in the 19th minute, after receiving a cross from Curry. In the 40th minute, Curry struck past an advancing Cumberland goalie, Deangelo Austin, to make it 2-0 at half time. The second half saw Portmore dominating.
In the 42nd minute, Curry scored his second goal, to make it 3-0 after dismissing several defenders and leaving the Cumberland custodian on the turf before slotting home. Cumberland's captain, Romar Gordon, netted from the penalty spot in the 45th minute to give his side a lifeline. However, Rasheed Hamilton put the game beyond doubt as his 69th-minute strike gave Portrmore a 4-1 lead. Cumberland's Ramone Howell scored from a free kick to make it 4-2, but Portmore's Jerondy Henry scored the game's final goal on the stroke of full time, igniting wild celebrations on and off the field.
Honours shared at church cricket awards
Faith Temple New Testament walked away with the big prize of being crowned champions of the tournament at the Power of Faith Ministries Twenty/20 Church cricket league awards at the Power of Faith Multi-purpose complex last Saturday, but they still had to share the spotlight with runner-up Old Harbour New Testament.
Faith Temple won two major awards, including best wicketkeeper that went to Dwayne Sinclair. Old Harbour took home two awards, batsman of the competition, Devoy Smith, and top bowler Marlon Walters. Smith tallied 104 runs in four innings, with a topscore of 44, while Walters, in 14 overs, took 13 wickets for 45 runs at an average of 3.2 runs apiece. Braeton New Testament's Desmond Hamilton copped the best bowling figures award with an average of one, 3-3 in three overs; Power of Faith International's Peter Harrison was adjudged best all-rounder, making contributions with the ball, bat and wicketkeeping, while Power of Faith's wicketkeeper/batsman Glen Wellington got the award for highest individual score, 52 runs.
Juici Patties netball league
Jamalco, Windalco and Mico University will aim for four straight wins in this weekend's round of the Juici Patties-sponsored Clarendon Senior and Junior league at the Mineral Heights Sports Complex, starting at 1:30 p.m.
In last weekend's third round, Shauna Carradice could not match her 35-goal haul in the previous weekend's big 50-27 win over Holmwood A, but her team came up trumps as she netted 27 from 33 tries to sink Optimist 36-10.
Jamalco kept their unbeaten run but not before surviving a strong scare to edge Hayes 31-29, for whom Amarita Smith pumped in 20 from 26 tries. Nicole Aikens led them home with an unconvincing 26 from 35 attempts. The generally poor day for the top shooters continued even as Windalco defeated Denbigh High A 35-28 with Annakay Griffiths ending with 23 points from 30 tries.
In the other matchups, Holmwood Technical A easily won their team derby, edging their 'B' counterparts 39-19 - Denene Taylor mining 30 from 40 attempts.
In the Junior division, Denbigh High B demolished Fogo High 22-3; Glenmuir beat Gravel Hill 19-13; Humble Lion edged McRebuilders 16-13; Toll Gate toppled Claremount 23-16, while Longsville were awarded a walkover against Ricam of Mandeville, who were penalised for arriving late.
In tomorrow's senior league the matches scheduled are: Hayes vs Holmwood B; Jamalco vs Holmwood A; Optimist vs Windalco; Denbigh A vs Mico University.
In the junior league: McRebuilders vs Gravel Hill; Toll Gate vs Ricam; Fogo High vs Claremount; Glenmuir vs Denbigh B; Longsville vs Humble Lion.
Jamalco football resumes
The Jamalco football league resumes this weekend after a two-week break in which organisers met with the respective teams to iron out disciplinary concerns.
Wembley field will host all four games. Today, in the first at 2 p.m., Top Halse Hall play Mineral Heights while at 4 p.m., Napoli tackle Rail Road.
In tomorrow's matches, home team Wembley entertain South Manchester while at 4 p.m. Raymonds take on Savannah.
The respective zone leaders are Top Hill (Zone One), Juventus (Zone Two) and Invincible (Zone Three).
In a recent match, Top Hill created the biggest upset, defeating defending champions Sunset 2-1.
Invincible have amassed most points so far - seven - following wins against Top Halse Hall (2-1) and Port (3-2), as well as draw against New Bowens.
Studds nail Central 12-0
Defending champions Studds sent out a warning, nailing the all-female team Central 12-0 in the opening match of the Western Union-sponsored Porus Under-15 league.
The league, which began 15 years ago, is the longest-running junior league in Manchester and kicked off last weekend at the Porus Community Centre with a family football extravaganza, as well as an opening parade of the 10 competing teams.
Romario Mullings, who plays for Manchester in the Juici Patties South Central Confed Under-15, netted seven times as Studds kicked off action in Zone A.
Studds, who also won the competition in 2005, will next be in action on Wednesday against Settlement.
Three games are on tomorrow at the Porus Community Centre starting at 1 p.m. Broad Leaf vs Rising Star; Connection vs Settlement; and Tuff Gong vs Genus.
Cobbla Church League
Village defeated Contrivance 4-1 last weekend to move in serious contention for a quarter-final spot in the Cobbla Church League, sponsored and organised by the New Testament Church of God in that area. Village, in scoring their first win, were lifted to four points and can hope for more with upcoming games against Church United and Chantilly.
Meanwhile, goals from captain Imran Lewis and Dwayne Brown pushed West Road to the top of Group B following a 2-0 win over rivals Richmond. West Road are on 10 points, followed by George North (9), Spring Ground (7) and Richmond (3). All four are assured of quarter-final berths.
Mile Gully, who lead Group A with nine points, are likely to secure pole position tomorrow as they are eyeing full points against winless Chantilly, who have joined Contrivance as the teams out of contention.
Fans are likely to be treated to a battle royal in tomorrow's feature game at 4 p.m. between George North and Spring Ground.
