'Gang' label not constructive
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Proper usage of words helps to shape our lives and inculcate a culture that guides any nation towards civility. Therefore, as a people, as a nation, as a leading newspaper, we must be very careful about our choice of words.
Recently, The Gleaner has been headlining its editorials referring to the 'Gangs of Gordon House'. Well, I am not a fan of politicians. I believe that, for the most part, they do not have the country's interest at heart.
However, they are still our elected leaders. They are the highest political leadership we have. To marginalise them by using the word 'gang', which we know is associated with criminal elements, is not good for the nation.
The Gleaner is a very influential paper that can help to positively shape the nation. My suggestion is that the paper begins to use constructive words.
I am, etc.,
