Hi-tech M-Class Benz launched

Meeting the 2012 M-Class Mercedes head-on can be intimidating, given the aggressive aura generated by its bold, impressive look. But after getting past the 19-inch wheels, it was the interior of the new vehicle that really grabbed attention at last Wednesday's unveiling, hosted by local authorised dealer Silver Star Motors, at 51 South Camp Road, Kingston.

The key thing is to take time to adjust the seat properly for driving comfort, being able to check all mirrors with little head movement. The engineers have already done an excellent job of placing the controls within easy reach, and so clear visibility of the road is a given.

Learning the details of the many electronic features literally at your fingertips will take time, if one is technologically challenged. However, the layout makes it easy to access essential vehicle information via the two-tube instrument cluster and the large monochrome 11.4-cm display between the tubes.

Then there is the four-spoke multifunction steering wheel, featuring 12 trapezoidal buttons for trip computer, radio, telephone, etc., with ergonomic use of the 7G-Tronic Plus via the Direct Select lever and the Direct Select gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

Adequate space

Automotives was surprised to hear someone raise concerns about the trunk of the vehicle, since it was more than adequate, especially given the legroom - both front and back.

Powered by 2.1-turbo diesel engine, the new M-Class scores all-round marks for comfort, innovative safety equipment and a downright impressive cabin.

The problem is taking the time to understand all the technology within easy reach, and does one need all of that, really? Just how much of these the average owner will ever get to use is something Automotives ponders.
