Nearly 10,000 illiterate students promoted to high school

Ministry of Education officials this morning told the PAC that nearly 10,000 illiterate students are promoted to high schools each year.



Permanent Secretary in the Education Ministry Audrey Sewell admitted that there is a crisis.



Chief Education Officer Jasper Lawrence told the committee that these students received a score of 33 per cent or lower in Language Arts in the Grade Six Achievement Test.



He says students who received such grades are considered functionally illiterate
