Meanwhile, Gael Monfils of France and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland joined the long list of players to retire in matches this week. Monfils quit while trailing Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia 6-2, 3-0 because of a bad back.
The unseeded Wawrinka was treated on court for stomach pain and retired when trailing Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 3-6, 7-6, 4-2.
