UPDATE: JDF, JCF welcome Tivoli Enquiry announcement
The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) says it welcomes today’s announcement of a Commission of Enquiry into the May 2010 Security Operations.
The Office of the Prime Minister made the announcement.
In a statement this afternoon, the JDF said there have been numerous unfortunate conclusions on the basis of unsubstantiated allegations, misrepresentation and uninformed analyses.
It says, if left without rigorous and objective investigation, the wrong impression of the force may be given.
"We support the decision therefore, as we believe that such a Commission of Enquiry will be conducted with the appropriate rigor and objectivity that will shed light on the facts, and help to paint a true picture of the circumstances surrounding the May 2010 operation," said a JDF spokesperson.
"We are satisfied that our policies, training and general conduct of the operation can stand objective scrutiny," the spokesperson said.
"If there are indeed instances where individuals deviated from the Force’s Rules of Engagement and/or other Force policies to the detriment of any citizen then we are eager to have those facts revealed so the due processes for accountability and sanctions can be effected."
The police high command also says it welcomes the Enquiry.
"The Jamaica Constabulary Force will participate when required and also offers its full support to the enquiry,” the High Command said late this evening.
More than 70 people were killed in 2010 when the members of the security forces went into Tivoli to search for then fugitive Christopher 'Dudus' Coke.
