Supreme Court to hear PSC case today

Published:Thursday | January 10, 2008 | 10:47 AM

The Supreme Court is expected today to begin a hearing into whether the Prime Minister acted lawfully when he dismissed the members of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

Mrs. Simpson Miller believes the PSC should be offered a fair hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal into the allegations of misconduct.

The opposition leader tried unsuccessfully to prevent the Prime Minister from dismissing the former commission.

She also attempted to stop Mr. Golding from appointing new members before today’s hearing.

Yesterday, the Governor General announced the appointment of new PSC members.

The previous PSC members had recommended that Professor Stephen Vasciannie be appointed to replace Michael Hylton as Solicitor General.

However the Governor General is still to act on that recommendation.

The JLP administration does not want Professor Vasciannie to be appointed.
