Alleged lottery scammers caught stealing electricity

Published:Monday | June 16, 2014 | 9:24 AM

The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) is reporting that alleged lottery scammers are among 444 persons arrested for stealing electricity since the start of the year.

It says earlier this month, members of the security forces in Glengoffe, St Catherine, arrested four persons at a dwelling, for involvement in lottery scamming.

The JPS says it later discovered that the dwelling was illegally connected to the power grid.

Meanwhile, the company says up to last week Thursday, 81,013 throw-ups had been removed from lines and poles across the country.

In addition 5,681 meters were reportedly audited.

The JPS says it continues to use a multi-pronged approach to reducing electricity theft.
