University lecturer and Deputy Solicitor General Professor Stephen Vasciannie, believes the state should only assist members of the police force when it is proven that the officer acted in self-defence in incidents of police killings.

Professor Stephen Vasciannie said the number of police killings in Jamaica suggest that some agents of the state are acting with disregard for human rights.

Professor Vasciannie said the right to life is the most basic human right that is protected by the Jamaican constitution. However, there is a shocking disregard for the right to life in Jamaica.

He said the police must not be allowed to continue carrying out extra-judicial killings.
