Update: Fatal bus crash in Portland

Published:Tuesday | December 22, 2009 | 1:16 PM

The two women who were last night killed after the bus they were travelling in plunged into a pond are yet to be identified.

A team is still searching for a child who has not been accounted for.

The police say a Toyota Hiace bus with passengers on board was en route from Port Antonio to Annotto Bay about 7:45 p.m. when the crash happened.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network, the driver of the Hiace bus lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a collision.

However, Mayor of Port Antonio, Floyd Patterson believes the accident was the result of heavy rainfall and deplorable road conditions.

Meanwhile, 6 persons who were passengers in the bus have been treated at the Port Antonio Hospital.

The driver has since been taken into police custody.

The accident follows a similar one last December in which a market truck overturned near the Rio Grande Valley in the parish killing several persons and injuring others.
