Mary Jane’s* 12-year-old daughter has Down’s syndrome, is autistic and cognitively delayed, and will require medical care for the rest of her life. Determined to provide for her daughter’s future, the retired Jamaican entrepreneur, now living in the United States, had built a US$80,000 nest egg by 2021 to cover her future medical needs. She began exploring short-term investments as a way to increase her savings and that’s when a friend introduced her to Delta Capital Partners, Jane recounted during an interview with The Sunday Gleaner last Wednesday.

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — Guyana’s government on Sunday appointed a group of international experts to investigate the recent sinking of a state ferry that killed dozens of passengers in the country’s worst maritime disaster on record. The 87-year-old MV Barima capsized in Atlantic waters on June 18 after it departed the capital, Georgetown, en route to Port Kaituma, an Indigenous community near Venezuela. Authorities have said they believe 179 passengers were aboard, but divers so far have found only 73 bodies, with another 76 people rescued.

Stolen vehicle pursuit ends in fatal police shooting in West Kingston

A man was fatally shot during an alleged confrontation with police in West Kingston on Sunday afternoon after cops say they pursued a reported stolen motor vehicle through sections of Kingston. It is reported that at about 3 o'clock, a police team responded to the sighting of a motor vehicle that was reported stolen several weeks ago. The vehicle was reportedly seen along Spanish Town Road, where officers reportedly signalled the driver to stop. The driver allegedly sped away, prompting a police chase.

Cayman Islands confirms poultry disease outbreak, says no risk to humans

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands, CMC – The Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture (DoA) has confirmed outbreaks of the highly contagious poultry disease, infectious coryza, in an undisclosed number of chicken flocks across the territory. Officials stressed that while the disease can significantly affect the health of birds and reduce egg production, it does not pose a risk to human health and does not make poultry meat or eggs unsafe to eat. The respiratory disease affects only birds and is caused by the bacterium Avibacterium paragallinarum.

Hotel pipeline tops US$4.2b, but brand name projects face delays

Jamaica has facilitated more than US$4.2 billion in hotel investments through JAMPRO, but roughly 10 per cent of the pipeline remains delayed, including a Marriott-branded property in Trelawny. These projects – facilitated in the fiscal year that ended in March – are expected to deliver 8,943 new hotel rooms and create an estimated 25,705 jobs, according to Government of Jamaica filings this month to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. The investments are part of a broader effort to rebuild a sector disrupted by Hurricane Melissa last October.
