The launch of Before the Rain, Christine Craig’s wonderful new collection, was held on Sunday, October 25, at the School of Drama, Edna Manley College. The author captivated the audience with her wide-ranging, deeply felt poems that resonated on many levels. The short story shared was so vivid and engaging that it felt as though a movie was unfolding before our eyes.
The work is powerful, evocative, and deeply human, leaving the audience eager to experience more. Craig invited two students from the School of Drama to join her in the readings, and student readers Ariel and Dimarco performed beautifully, adding an interesting dimension to the event.
Emcee Jean Lowrie-Chin’s introduction touched on Craig’s wide-ranging literary and non-literary publications and her contribution to the furthering of women’s equality issues in Jamaica through her involvement in the Women’s Bureau. She quipped that she got the call about Before the Rain during Jamaica’s drought and that it was being launched after the rain, like a promise kept.
Professor Beth Harry moderated the discussion session that followed the readings, and Janet Muirhead-Stewart, deputy dean of the School of Drama, gave a lively welcome to the School and the Edna Manley campus.
