Yeza says reggae music 'alive and well' with the younger generation
Up-and-coming Reggae singer Yeza, also known as Rebel Empress, from Bull Bay, St Andrew, says reggae music is thriving in the hands of the younger generation.
She made the declaration during her set at Rebel Salute now under way at the Grizzly's Plantation Cove in St Ann.
“Dem seh reggae music is dying, but I'm here to say reggae music is alive and well in the hands of the younger generation. If you believe reggae music is still alive say rebel up!” she urged the audience.
With a sound she dubs 'rude girl roots' and strutting in a red ensemble, with nude combat boots and a black leather trench coat, the singjay seemed comfortable and completely in her element on stage. Her soulful melodies echoed in the venue and were well received by the audience. She was the fourth act on stage.
After the stage was blessed by a mixed group of Nyabinghi drummers and chanters, the first performer was Derajah who came out clad in all-white overalls, with a red turban and Rastafari scarf. His short, but sweet set, was the perfect way to open the show. He was followed by Falcon who used his time to showcase his powerful vocals.
Sharing the stage with members of his family, performer Raphi was third on stage with the Rock Top Crew. His backup singers, comprised of his sisters and his brother, also took centre stage during his performance.
Despite the traffic pile-up to the Grizzly's Plantation Cove venue, the 29th staging of Rebel Salute is off to a strong start.
Host Jennifer 'Jenny Jenny' Small, told the crowd that whether event goers were late or on time, there would be a keen focus on staying on schedule tonight. She said she was happy that the performers have, so far, been sticking to the time they have been allotted.
Rebel Salute was first held in 1994. The meatless and alcohol-free stage show is a celebration of Rastafari culture. It also features a number of artisan booths and a herb curb village.
The two-night show is expected to see a slew of entertainers gracing the stage. Performances from Third World, Tony Rebel, Rytikal, Nation Boss, Rodney Pryce, Lady G, Kabaka Pyramid, Ernie Smith and Yaksta are expected later tonight.
