Sumner Gerard, New US envoy, arrives

The new US Ambassador to Jamaica, Mr. Sumner Gerard, and Mrs. Gerard, arrived here yesterday, landing at Norman Manley International Airport.

The Ambassador and his wife were met by Mr. Louis Boothe, Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of External Affairs; Mrs. Ashley Hewitt, wife of the Deputy Chief of the US Mission; and senior staffers of the American Embassy.

Following is the Ambassador’s airport arrival statement:
“We have been looking forward keenly to our arrival in Jamaica. The people of my nation have a very high regard and warm affection for Jamaica. Strong bonds of friendship bind us together, and it is our privilege to serve to strengthen that excellent and enduring relationship.

“Many of the people of the United States have already visited Jamaica, and all hope to, which is some indication of how we feel about your lovely island.
“This is our very first visit to your nation and we have earnestly looked forward to being here. This attractive island has the well-deserved reputation of not only being one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but has the solid respect of her fellow nations for the fine government, outstanding leadership, and most of all, her hospitable, cheerful and dynamic people.

Harmony
“We hope to have the opportunity to visit every part of Jamaica and see the new and the old: the cultural heritage, the University and other institutions of learning, the farms, industry, the mountains, and to see the famous National Dance Theatre Company and to hear the renowned Jamaican Folk Singers.
“Jamaica and the United States have so many interests in common, our nations will surely continue to strive to achieve harmony in all areas of mutual interest in matters great and small.
“I am conscious of the great confidence that has been entrusted in me, and every day the entire staff of our Embassy in Kingston and I will be seeking new ways to reinforce sound and fruitful co-operation between our two countries.”
