Time to get tough on party noise

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Below are some pointers our lawmakers should consider in their review of the Noise Abatement Act and related legislation and protocols.

* Government should lead by promoting a change of culture in the time and manner in which we congregate and party.

* Enforce strict compliance with the stipulated hours granted for partying in public places.

* Ensure that adequate venues are maintained and built for entertainment events.

* All promoters should be registered with the Companies Office of Jamaica and be bona fide business persons with accounting records, including statutory deductions.

The Jamaican Government should provide incentives for those who operate within the margins of the Noise Abatement Act. The Government should embark on a public campaign to sensitise patrons and promoters on the contribution music plays to the gross domestic product of Jamaica and their responsibility as stakeholders.
