Can cruise ships be used as temporary accommodation?
THE EDITOR, Madam:
It would be an understatement to say it is heart-wrenching to see the devastation and suffering caused by hurricane Melissa. So many lives have been impacted in so many ways. We are thankful for the relief supplies pouring in to help our people and the many humanitarian organizations on the ground.
However, this is still not enough. It is not enough to say we are thankful for life. Our people are most precious. Therefore the highest ethical and moral values must be exercised in the way our people are cared for during this time.
Cruise ships were bringing various supplies to Jamaica. They have profited handsomely in the past for using Jamaica as a tourist destination. But these cruise ship companies need to do more for our people and country.
I would like to strongly recommend a collaboration between the Government of Jamaica and the cruise ship companies to provide temporary, safe and secure housing on their cruise ships for those without homes. I am sure they can donate a couple of their ships for disaster relief accommodations.
Our deepest and most-heartfelt prayers are with our fellow Jamaicans and our beloved country. May God richly bless our nation and may it soar again on Eagles’ wings.
