Opposition Senator Floyd Morris says he is not aware of any consultation with the disabled community in the drafting of the regulations that will govern the proposed new road traffic legislation.

Morris, who is blind, was speaking during this afternoon's debate in the Senate on the Road Traffic Act 2018.

Government Senator Kamina Johnson-Smith, in opening the debate, revealed that the draft regulations are almost completed.

But, Morris took issue with this announcement.

"From my certain knowledge, in the drafting of the regulations, I am not aware of any consultation with the community of persons with disabilities," he said.

"It cannot be that are going to be formulating regulations to govern the Road Traffic Act and consultations are not had with a significant population, persons with disabilities," Morris added.

The lawmaker said he would be "extremely annoyed" if the regulations are drafted without such consultations.

"We don't want regulations to be drafted in the Parliament that is going to govern persons with disabilities and they are not consulted," he said.
